Pete Reed MBE
Pete, a former Oxford Blue, is the reigning Olympic Champion in the men’s four, winning gold in Beijing in a thrilling race over Australia and France. He was awarded an MBE in the 2009 New Year’s Honours list in recognition of his achievement.
For the first World Cup of the 2012 season in Belgrade, Pete won gold in the men's four with Tom James, Alex Gregory and Andrew Triggs-Hodge.
At the 2012 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials held on 10/11 March at Eton/Dorney, Pete and crew mate Andrew Triggs Hodge maintained their title as winners of the men's pair.
At the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Pete raced in the men's pair with Andrew Triggs Hodge. After dominating their heat and semi-final, the duo were unfortunate to come up against the reigning World Champions from New Zealand. Despite the disappointment of a silver medal for the British pair, both pairs remain comfortably ahead of the rest of the world
During the 2011 World Cup Series, Pete and crewmate Andrew Triggs Hodge in the men's pair won gold at Munich and a silver in Lucerne behind New Zealand.
At the 2011 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials held on 16-17 April at Eton/Dorney, Pete won his seventh successive title, winning the men's pair with Andrew Triggs Hodge in a time of 6:37.50.
At the 2010 World Rowing Championships on New Zealand's Lake Karapiro, Pete with crewmate Andrew Triggs Hodge in the men’s pair again came up against the reigning World Champions, Eric Murray and Hamish Bond of New Zealand this time in front of their home crowd, and won silver after an epic struggle - just three-tenths of a second behind the New Zealanders. Greece took the bronze.
Pete, who has enjoyed a phenomenal rise through the GB senior ranks, was a late entrant to the sport, learning to row at the University of the West of England in 2002. Whilst there he was selected for the GB coxed four in the World U23 Championships in Belgrade in 2003, just missing out on a medal when they finished 4th in the final.
He narrowly missed Olympic selection in 2004 and stormed into contention for the top men's boat in 2005 by winning the pair at the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials with Andrew Triggs Hodge. Both men were fresh from the winning Oxford Blue boat in the University Boat Race and were duly named in the men's four with Alex Partridge and Steve Williams.
Pete won gold with this new men's four at the 2005 World Championships in Japan to cap a tremendous season for the crew. They had taken gold at every World Cup in 2005 - Eton, Munich and Lucerne.
The World Cup Series in 2006 brought further success with golds in Munich, Poznan and Lucerne. At the World Championships at Eton/Dorney the GB four in front of their home crowd extended their unbeaten run to 24 races to take the world title for a second time.
At the 2007 GB Senior Selection Trials in Belgium Pete won the men's pairs final for the third year running with Andrew Triggs Hodge. The four had a mixed season finishing a disappointing 4th at the 2007 World Championships in Munich.
After a difficult 2008 season, the crew of the men’s four emerged at the Olympic Games in Beijing as once more the crew to beat. At the semi-final stage, where all three of the 2007 World Championships medal boats were eliminated, they produced an excellent performance to win. Their final proved to be a dramatic battle, but by digging really deep with only 220m to go, the crew drew alongside the Australians who had led the race from the start and then broke through to win in 6:06.57. A superb achievement.
For the 2009 season, Pete teamed up with fellow Olympian Andrew Triggs Hodge, coached by Jürgen Grobler, to race the men's pair. This new men's pair won gold and two silvers in the World Cup series and at the World Rowing Championships in Poznan pushed the New Zealanders to within one second of Pinsent & Cracknell's World Record time of 6:14 to win a superb silver medal with Greece taking bronze.
At the 2009 GB Rowing Senior Trials Pete maintained his run of success winning the pair, this time with a new partner in Start rower, Alex Gregory.
