Paul Mattick
For the first World Cup of the 2012 season, Paul raced in the lightweight men's pair with crewmate Adam Freeman-Pask. The duo lead their race from the start and won a convincing gold medal ahead of the pair from the Czech Republic.
At the 2012 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials held on 10/11 March at Eton/Dorney, Paul came 3rd in the lightweight men's single scull.
For the 2011 World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia, Paul raced in the lightweight men's four with crewmates Richard Chambers, Chris Bartley, and Rob Williams. The crew came through from 6th for an extremely close finish to eventually take a bronze medal, just being pipped by Italy.
During the 2011 World Cup Series, Paul raced in the lightweight men's four, taking bronze in Munich, only .02 of a second behind France in second place with Denmark winning gold. In Lucerne, the crew won an impressive Gold medal beating Italy and Denmark.
At the 2010 World Rowing Championships on New Zealand's Lake Karapiro, in an incredibly tight final, Paul - along with crewmates Chris Bartley, Richard Chambers and Rob Williams in the lightweight men's four - won gold by seven hundredths of a second, with Australia taking silver themselves just a hundredth of a second ahead of China in bronze. A fabulous performance to cap a great season for the British crew.
For the 2010 World Cup Series, Paul raced in the lightweight men's four winning gold in Munich and Lucerne and silver in Bled. This was an exceptional World Cup season for the four in a very competitive field.
Paul began rowing in the 2000/2001 season for his college, having previously played club rugby to a high level for Frome RC. He studied Physiology and Pharmacology at Leeds University and has completed a PhD at Oxford University. Whilst at Oxford Paul competed in the lightweight reserve boat. He then joined Wallingford RC in 2003 to learn to scull under the eyes of Rob Dauncey and Pete Sudbury.
In 2005 he raced in the lightweight men's four at the Eton World Cup in May. He won a bronze medal in the lightweight men's pair with Daniel Harte at the Munich World Cup in June, finished 5th in the same event at the Lucerne World Cup finals and went on to win the B Final at the World Championships in Japan.
At the 2006 World Championships the British lightweight men's four reached the final in exciting style and took 5th place.
In 2007, Paul finished 4th in the lightweight men’s single at the GB Rowing Team Senior Trials in Belgium. He won bronze in the lightweight men's four at the Linz World Cup, silver at the Amsterdam World Cup and gold at the Lucerne World Cup. The crew went on to win gold at the World Championships, the first ever lightweight Olympic class gold for GB!
In the 2008 World Cup series he raced in the lightweight four winning silver followed by a 5th and 6th place. Paul raced in the lightweight men's four at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and finished 5th.
At the 2009 GB Rowing Team Senior Trials, Paul narrowly lost the final of the lightweight single to Rob Williams who became his crewmate for 2009. Having chosen to make the move from sweep to sculling Paul raced through the 2009 World Cup series in the Olympic class double scull, taking 4th in Banyoles and Munich and 5th in Lucerne. At the 2009 World Rowing Championships in Poznan Rob and Paul were 6th.
